9 Best Bike Messenger Cycling Movies to Get your Fixie!

Bike Messenger Movie (s)

Here are the 9 best bike messenger movies, fixie bicycle movies, cycling movies; whatever you want to call them. For those of you who answer yes to the following questions: Do you live and breathe the fixie lifestyle? Do you think that Joseph Gordon Levitt bike movie (Premium Rush) is the best thing since sliced bread?  Do you think about riding all the time? If this is the case, there are several easy ways for you to get your fixed gear bicycle movie fix (or fixie haha) from the comforts of your home.

Because flip flop hub bikes are so popular, there have been several movies made about them over the years, some good and some bad.

We had to make this list as we love single speed commuter bikes, the whole bike courier lifestyle, and movies just the same. Here are a few movies about these hipster bikes that you should consider watching.

  1. Premium Rush (Fiction-2012) - Our Favorite Bike Messenger Movie

To start our list of fixie bike movies we ask a simple question: What more could you want than a bike messenger movie that stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt? This is the perfect combination.

The movie follows the life of Wilee, who is portrayed by Gordon-Levitt. Wilee is a disenchanted Columbia Law School graduate who has yet to take the bar.

Wilee has started working as a high-flying New York City bike messenger that dominates the streets with a stylish fixie. He eventually comes into contact with a questionable package that a corrupt police officer wants.

The rest of the Premium Rush movie follows Wilee as he engages in some extremely risky bike chase scenes as he tries to avoid the corrupt police officer trying to capture him.

Moreover, this movie will be right up your alley if you love the fixie bike messenger culture. Definitely one of the best cycling movies or at least the most notorious.

  1. Line of Sight (Documentary-2012)

Of all the movies about fixie bikes in this list, Line of Sight is a documentary that provides a rare glimpse into the world of underground bike messenger racing across 20 countries and 30 cities. Pretty unique!

In the movie, rider Lucas Brunelle has outfitted his custom helmet with a camera that he uses to capture footage from his rides. His rides include hectic city streets, expressways in Mexico City, a ride across the frozen Charles River, under the Mediterranean Sea, across the Great Wall of China, and deep into the jungles of Guatemala.

"Lucas Brunelle goes for it. If you want to see what it's like to play a live game of 'Frogger', on a bike, with only one life, check out ‘Line of Sight,’” professional BMX rider Matt Hoffman said about the movie.

If you want an intimate bike messenger movie that features locations all across the world, this is the movie for you.

  1. To Live & Ride in L.A. (Documentary-2010)

Los Angeles is a dynamic city that has an established fixed gear bicycle community.

In this cycling movie, viewers are provided with a unique look into the vibrant street culture of L.A.

“From races through rush-hour traffic to midnight loft parties, TO LIVE & RIDE IN L.A. is a fast paced-trip through the busy streets and back-alleys of one of the world's largest cities,” writes IMDB.

Regardless, the movie has it all, especially if you want to see off the map spots, alley-cat races, the infamous Wolfpack, or want to see local crews, graffiti artists, and other iconic L.A. personalities.

  1. MacaFrama (Sport-2009)

MacaFrama is a little different than the other fixie bike movies or cycling movies on this list. Line of Sight and To Live & Ride in L.A. focus on the overall fixie lifestyle and experience, while MacaFrama is more about the artistic side of riding. The movie follows several fixie riders in San Francisco as they shred the streets and show off their riding skills.

The focus of this film is jaw-dropping fixie footage paired with some awesome music. It may not have the highest budget, but it certainly will scratch your fixie itch.

Overall, this is the fixie bike movie for you if you want to watch some killer riders and rock out at the same time.

  1. Keep Going (Short-2016)

Keep Going isn’t nearly as long as any of the other films we’ve mentioned, but it is a passion project by a fixie rider from Portland, Oregon.

Portland is a city that loves bikes and Keep Going captures the fixie enthusiasm that this city has. The film focuses on the fixie experience and the feelings that a rider experiences when they become part of this community.

  1. Brussels Express (Short Documentary-2013)

Riding in the city comes with its own unique set of disadvantages. Any experienced fixie rider will tell you that they have had a few near crashes because of bad drivers.

Brussels Express takes a look at the relationship between cyclists and cars in Europe’s most congested city. The film interviews city officials, drivers, and bike messengers to see what can be done to improve the situation.

This bike messenger movie clocks in just below 20 minutes and is worth watching if you want to learn more about bike messengers and their experiences on the road.

  1. Revoked (Sport-2009)

Revoked is very similar in style to MacaFrama. It features a sporty style in which the camera follows several fixie riders as they do tricks and ride the busy streets of California.

The movie stars DJ Mull, Rich Baldwin, Matt Spencer, Gus Molina, Josh Boothby, Jakob Santos, and Justin Mitchell.

Still, this is the perfect movie for you if you just want to see some crazy fixie tricks.

  1. The Godmachine (Documentary-Unknown Year)

The Godmachine takes an in-depth look into the world of bicycle messengers. The film features couriers in Hamburg, Germany, New York City, and Kyoto, Japan.

The focus of this bike messenger movie is their experiences on the busy city streets. The core of the film includes biking footage, detailed interviews with bike messengers, and much more.

Overall, this is a great film for you if you are curious about bike messengers and how they survive out there on the busy city streets.

  1. NYC x MTL – Cycling from New York City to Montreal (Documentary-2013)

Have you ever dreamed of biking from one major city to another? For many fixie riders, this is the dream.

NYC x MTL follows 11 riders as they travel from Montreal to New York City.

This film is tied together by fixies, great music, and the bonding experience achieved through a long trip. It also features metrics from each leg of the ride, which provides with an in-depth look into what it takes to take part in a long ride.

Furthermore, if you plan to travel a long distance on your fixie, check out this movie to see what it takes.
