Electric Wheel Bike - Living With An E-bike Conversion Wheel
An electric bike is something that can make your daily life a lot easier. Plenty of us use our regular bikes as a way to get from one place to another, but that can sometimes be tiring and difficult. This is especially true if you're someone who lives far away from their job, or has another reason to have a lengthy commute on a daily basis. For this kind of person, a bit of assistance would be lovely, and electric bikes are perfect for commuting. And that assistance can come in the shape of an electric wheel bike.
Now, we understand. There are many options out there and that's why we're here today. We won't only explain what an electric wheel bike is. We'll also show you how a day with one looks like, and how you can make the most of it. That being said, let's not waste any time and get into it.
What is an electric wheel bike?
When it comes to bicycles, there are two main categories as far as power goes. One of them is the conventional bicycle. It has no motor, no engine, and requires you to turn pedals in order to move forward. The other one is an e-bike, something that's pretty popular nowadays. and makes use of an electric motor that will get you anywhere you're going faster, or less tired and sweaty. There is a category of people though, who consider that a conventional bike is slow and needs too much effort, but an e-bike is expensive to buy and maintain. If only there was a middle ground, that category of people would be pretty happy. Well, there is - an electric wheel bike. The concept is pretty simple. You get your conventional bike, you add an e-bike conversion wheel, and you get the perfect middle ground.
How does it work?
In order to understand how an electric wheel bike works, we'll touch upon how a conventional bicycle works. Basically, you have a crankset that you turn, as well as a chain that transfers that power to the rear hub. The rear hub spins, thus spinning the rear wheel, and keeping you moving. In this case, the front hub is pretty much useless. All it needs to do is spin freely and not slow you down.
An electric wheel bike makes use of that "useless" front hub. It basically adds an electric motor to it, turning it into a motor that powers the entire bike. The concept is shockingly simple, even though there's a bit more engineering involved in it than we describe here. But let's leave that to the engineers, all we need to do is ride our electric wheel bike and enjoy it. You basically get an electric wheel for bike.
The result? You have your conventional bike. You ride it like one, turn the pedals and everything. But when necessary, you also have a motor that can give you a bit more speed, or a bit more distance when you're tired. The electric wheel bike is truly the best of both worlds and a great way to add a bit of power to your bike.
Let's compare it to a conventional e-bike
This type of talk does beg the question, why not just go for an e-bike? Well, let's compare them both so you can see for yourself that there are truly compelling reasons to go for an electric wheel bike instead. We'll see what the electric bike wheel motor gets you that you won't find with a conventional e-bike. First things first, e-bikes are expensive. They require a lot more engineering for them to work right, and be durable, and hence the production (and therefore final sales) prices are higher. With an e-bike conversion wheel, you're only buying the wheel (or a whole electric wheel bike), and the price is significantly lower.
Another thing is that electric bikes are very, very heavy (average E-bike weighs 75-80 pounds). That motor takes up a large part of the frame, and no amount of lightweight components can completely offset the weight. There's also the fact that the weight is in the middle of the bike, low to the ground, which isn't the best place for a hefty block. On the other hand, with an electric wheel bike, there's a fairly small motor that's attached to the front hub. This isn't just lighter, it's a different type of weight since it rotates, so you'll feel it a bit less. Ride an electric wheel bike right after, or before an e-bike, and you'll immediately feel a massive difference.
One of the biggest complaints - especially with women, is that E-bikes are too heavy and clunky to operate.
Last but not least, there's compatibility. While it may seem like an e-bike is the perfect do-it-all solution, it isn't. There are situation where you'll wish you had a slightly different bike. Whether it's a completely rigid one, or one with more suspension, you'll definitely want that at some point. Well, with an electric wheel bike, you've got it. The wheel itself is interchangeable. This means you can fit it to just about any bike you want. That by itself does add quite a lot of versatility.
So, how does a day in the life with an electric wheel bike look like?
Well, the morning is kind of identical to any other morning, so we won't get into too much detail. I get up, I have my morning coffee, and I get dressed for work. In the meantime, I remember I'll need to stop by to my parents' house and drop off my father's USB drive when I'm going back home. That's going to add a bit of distance to my commute. I'll also want to pick up coffee on my way to work, and oh - I've got bills to pay while I'm on my lunch break. I keep forgetting about them. The lunch break is kinda short, though, not sure if I'll make it on time. That being said, the road to my parents' house isn't freshly paved. Instead, it resembles the cobblestones you'll find on Paris-Roubaix. That won't be too comfortable on my hybrid bike, so I'll opt for the cruiser instead, and make that my electric wheel bike. That one's got a ride that's a touch more forgiving. Given all the places I'll need to go to, I should definitely have some kind of assistance while riding, that'll get me there faster. Well, I just grab my e-bike conversion wheel, and put it at the front of my cruiser bike. Simple as that. And I'm out of my apartment, and on my electric wheel bike.
Let's grab coffee and head into the office
Yes, I know I just had coffee at home, but I'll need another one in order to put up with all the morning tasks that will be waiting at my desk. My favorite coffee shop isn't exactly along the way, and I'm running late. Well, fortunately, I've got that electric bike wheel front, so I use a bit of juice to make sure I get my cup of coffee to go, and still get to work on time. Made it - time to get some work done. If I hadn't had the electric bike front wheel hub motor, I would be late.
Before you know it, it's time for my lunch break. Well, I'm not going to have lunch because I have bills to pay. However, that's a fair bit away from my job. If I were on a conventional bicycle, chances are my lunch break wouldn't be enough. However, the e-bike conversion wheel allows me to get further for that same period of time. Now I can go, pay my bills, and come back with time left over to grab a quick snack. Perfect.
Time to head out to my parents' house
Now that I'm done with work, I hop on my electric wheel bike and head to my parents' house. I've had a long day at work, so you can say I'm pretty tired at this point. But I'm not pedaling that much, since the conversion wheel does most of the job for me. And considering I put it on my most comfortable bike, the cruiser, I have no issues whatsoever with the cobblestones. I get to my parents' house, and of course, it's not just leaving the USB drive and going home. Dinner is served, waiting for me, and I'll want to have a coffee with them after that, too. But I've got a wife and kids waiting for me at home. If I were riding a conventional bike, this would've been an issue. I would have to ride like crazy in order to spend some time with the little ones before they go to sleep. And I'm tired, both from the long day at work, and the commute to my parents' house. There's only one solution - rely on that electric bike conversion wheel again. And why not?
It lets me get home on time. It lets me get home much less tired than I would if I didn't have it. And it lets me spend the majority of my time on activities I love, instead of the commute itself. Did I mention that I also had time to get a few groceries on the way home, too?
Why an electric wheel bike, and not a conventional e-bike?
Many of you who have some kind of experience would argue that I could've done the same thing with a conventional e-bike. However, I beg to differ - let me explain why.
Weight is a major issue
First things first, I live in an apartment. I'm on the third floor, and unfortunately, there's no elevator. There's also no place to safely lock up the bike on the ground floor, so my best bet is to keep it at home. This means I have to carry it three floors up every time. An e-bike would be so much heavier that I would actually rather walk than do that. It's just not worth it for me. I also have a couple of sets of stairs on my way to work, ones I can't avoid so I have to lift my bike up those, too. While we're discussing the weight, it's also worth mentioning maneuverability. This might be an issue that's specific to me and my commute, but I share bike paths with plenty of other cyclists. I also need to do quick, tight turns in numerous alleyways. If I were to have a heavy block right above my crankset, that maneuverability would be significantly crippled. It won't make my commute impossible, but it'll make it a lot trickier to do. There's none of those issues with an electric wheel bike.
The price difference isn't something I can neglect either
Then, we have the price. While I do use my bike as my main means of transportation, I would still have a hard time justifying the price of an e-bike. They're simply too expensive, as they're pretty new, and until prices come down, I won't be getting one. I get everything I need from my electric wheel bike, so it's definitely not worth it for me. An argument could be made that you can get an entry level e-bike for the same price as an electric wheel bike. That might be true, but the quality of the rest of the components won't be on the same level. That's something I don't want to skimp on.
Also, I was to go for an electric bike wheel conversion kit, I could get the electric bike wheel hub motor for a fraction of the price. I'd still have an e-bike, but it'd be an electric bike wheel hub, and not a complete, pricey e-bike.
On the other hand, what happens if there's an issue with the motor? What if I manage to damage it somehow? Well, with an e-bike, I'd be out of luck. I would have to get a new motor, or a complete new frame, and both of those options are pretty expensive. With an electric conversion wheel, I just get myself a new front wheel - that's it.
I actually need the interchangeability
Ever heard of the saying that "the right number of bikes to have is n+1, where n is the number of bikes you currently have"? Well, I have, and I do have a couple of bikes at my disposal. I've got a road bike, a hardtail, a full suspension bike, and a cruiser. And while they're all different in their main purpose, I do like to use some of them interchangeably. If I were to need a road e-bike, and a mountain e-bike, that's two separate bikes. And it's not only the price, but I'm stuck with motors on both of them, something that's heavy and I don't always need. And I still have a cruiser bike with conventional power - my legs, which is far from ideal. That's my go-to, do-it-all city bike, so I do need the electric power. You see what my problem is? I don't only need an electric wheel for road bike, I need an electric bike wheel with battery I can use on any of my bikes.
And I do solve it quite successfully with the electric wheel bike method. I only have one wheel. Yes, that did require a bit of planning, as I need all the bikes I use it on to have the same wheel dimensions. But this is something I already had before, and even if I didn't have it, it wouldn't be too much of an issue to achieve. I basically paid the price of one motor, and I got three e-bikes. Add to that the possibility of getting another bike that I can use the wheel with, and you'll see what my point is. It's versatile, and I love it.
Wrapping things up - I really love my electric wheel bike!
There's one thing I have to admit. My life wouldn't be the same without my electric wheel bike. Well, bikes. One wheel gets me multiple bikes. From the likes of step through bikes, would I be able to get to work and back, even with an extra stop or two along the way? Probably, but it would require a lot of planning and me leaving home early, and getting home late. I was living with a 7-speed cruiser bike for a while, I'd know. For some, this might not be that much of an issue. For me, it is. I appreciate my sleep, and I appreciate the time I spend with my family in the evenings.
Chances are, after getting used to this, I would never go back to a conventional bike. I love my electric wheel bike a bit too much for that. I also wouldn't step up to a full-on e-bike, as that's pricey, and as I mentioned earlier, would actually get me in more trouble in quite a few situations.
So, when everything is said and done, I can comfortably conclude that an electric wheel bike is the best thing that has happened to me. It changed the way I get around town. It allows me to get anywhere and everywhere quickly, and without being nearly as tired as I'd be otherwise. And best of all, it didn't cost me too much to buy, ride and maintain. Would I buy another one if I decide to switch wheel sizes? Absolutely.

(verified owner)I wasn’t happy with the service as they don’t pick up the phone every time. It just sends you to text. I don’t have a text phone. The bike is very pretty so I’m not that mad. I know ya’ll are probably busy with a million things.

(verified owner)Love the bottle holder holes. Now I keep a bottle under my seat and one in the rack. They build this trail in our area. The millennial trail and I see a lot of bikes but none as cool as mine.
